S3E1 - Part 5

(Note: Remember I wrote this 25 years ago shortly after the show was cancelled.  This was before the actor playing Pete Martell , Jack Nance, passed away in 1996.  If I had written this today, he would've died in the explosion along with Andrew Packard)

Inside the Calhoun Memorial Hospital.  Agent Cooper is buttoning his shirt while Doc Hayward is writing some notes on his chart.  Sheriff Truman comes in.

Sheriff:           It looks like Pete is going to pull through.

Cooper:          What about Andrew?

Sheriff:           He's now in a coma.  It doesn't look good.  (To Doc) What happened to Ben   Horne?  I heard that he got injured at your house.

Doc:                Ben's going to be fine, unfortunately.  He just has a cut on his forehead and a minor concussion.

Sheriff:           Is there something you're not telling me.

Doc:                I'd rather not talk about it right now.

Sheriff:           Ben tells me that you pushed him into the mantle and that's how he got hurt.  Is that true?

Doc:                He deserved it.  Because of his big mouth my Donna has run away and we don't know where she is.  He's lucky that his injury wasn't worse.  (Almost afraid) Is he going to press charges?

Sheriff:           I asked him but he said that was not the right thing to do.  He also wanted me to tell you that he forgives you.  He also wants to know if you have heard from Donna.

Doc:                He's got no right to know about Donna.  After all, she is my daughter.

Cooper:          I think I'll go and see how Annie is.

Inside Annie's hospital room.  Norma Jennings is at her sister's side comforting her.

Norma:           I brought you some cherry pie.  I know how this hospital food can be.  Oh, Shelley sends her best.  She also told me to tell you to hurry up and come back to work.

Annie:            I can't tell you how much I rather be there than here.

Norma:           It isn't the same without you there.  Toad keeps on asking about you too.

Annie:            How is Toad?  Is he still leaving those huge tips (sarcastically)?

Annie and Norma chuckle as Cooper walks in.  Annie's face immediately turns from smiling to a look of fear.

Cooper:          It looks like you are doing a lot better.

Annie:            Get out of here.

Norma:           Annie, that's no way to talk to Agent Cooper.  He's the one that saved your life.

Annie:            That is not the Dale Cooper that I fell in love with.  The good Dale is still in that awful place.

Cooper (To Norma apologetically):              It must be the medication.  I hear that it can even make you hallucinate.

Annie:            It's not the medication.  I know who you are and I'm not going to let you hurt anyone else.

Cooper (fearfully):    Maybe I should come back later after you get some rest.  It's nice to see you again Norma.  Is that your famous cherry pie?  Maybe when I come back I can have a slice.

Norma:           Of course.  (To Annie after Cooper leaves) What is wrong with you?  I think you hurt his feelings.

Annie:            I don't care if I did.  Like I said, that is not the real Dale Cooper.

Norma:           How can you say that?

Annie:            Norma, I haven't told you about that awful place that man took me to.  There were all these strange people there.  There was this bad guy who looked just like Dale.  Dale was trying to get away from the bad Dale but was overtaken by him before we could escape.  The good Dale is still in there.  We have to save him before this bad Dale hurts anyone.

Norma:           I think Agent Cooper was right.  Maybe you do need your rest.  I'll come back later tonight.  And stay off that medication.  I think it is making you delirious.
